Milwaukee, Wisconsin, police officers spot Tracy Edwards running down the street in handcuffs, and upon investigation, they find one of the grisliest scenes in modern history: Jeffrey Dahmer’s apartment.

Edwards told the police that Dahmer had held him at his apartment and threatened to kill him. Although they initially thought the story was dubious, the officers took Edwards back to Dahmer’s apartment. Dahmer calmly explained that the whole matter was simply a misunderstanding and the officers almost believed him. However, they spotted a few Polaroid photos of dismembered bodies, and Dahmer was arrested.

When Dahmer’s apartment was fully searched, a house of horrors was revealed. In addition to photo albums full of pictures of body parts, the apartment was littered with human remains: Several heads were in the refrigerator and freezer; two skulls were on top of the computer; and a 57-gallon drum containing several bodies decomposing in chemicals was found in a corner of the bedroom. There was also evidence to suggest that Dahmer had been eating some of his victims.

Neighbors told both detectives and the press that they had noticed an awful smell emanating from the apartment but that Dahmer had explained it away as expired meat. However, the most shocking revelation about how Dahmer had managed to conceal his awful crimes in the middle of a city apartment building would come a few days later.

Apparently, police had been called two months earlier about a naked and bleeding 14-year-old boy being chased down an alley by Dahmer. The responding officers actually returned the boy, who had been drugged, to Dahmer’s apartment–where he was promptly killed. The officers, who said that they believed it to be a domestic dispute, were later fired.

A forensic examination of the apartment turned up 11 victims–the first of whom disappeared in March 1989, just two months before Dahmer successfully escaped a prison sentence for child molestation by telling the judge that he was desperately seeking to change his conduct. Dahmer later confessed to 17 murders in all, dating back to his first victim in 1978.

The jury rejected Dahmer’s insanity defense, and he was sentenced to 15 life terms. He survived one attempt on his life in July 1994, but was killed by another inmate on November 28, 1994.

Today in History: Jeffrey Dahmer, Infamous Milwaukee Cannibal, Was Arrested 28 Years Ago

On this day in history, infamous serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested by Milwaukee police. The murderer was responsible for the slayings of 17 boys and men.

Dahmer is one of America's most well-known serial killers because of his gruesome tactics and the ghastly fact that not only would he rape, kill and dismember his victims, but he'd also cook and eat their bodies.

It took a while for police to actually arrest Dahmer. He'd spent a bit of time in prison before the 1991 that ended his killing career for good. Dahmer was in prison for 10 months in 1988 because he'd groped a young boy, as well as offered the boy money for nude photos, according to a Time article published in 1991.

When Dahmer was released from prison, he was on probation, but his parole officer didn't check up on his home. It was for that reason Dahmer's frightening collection of human heads and other body parts, stored in his refrigerator, went undiscovered for some time.

Dahmer was officially caught by police in 1991 because one of his victims escaped alive. The victim, named Tracy Edwards, immediately told police that Dahmer had tried to murder him. Dahmer's arrest was quick and uneventful. He later told police that he typically found his victims at the mall, where he'd lure them to leave with him.

Some of the more disgusting details of Dahmer's killings include that he'd drug the victims before strangling them. After he dismembered their bodies, he'd sometimes boil decapitated heads. Time reported that Dahmer had sex with one body: Only one occasion was ever confirmed. Dahmer was also known for trying to create "real-life zombies," as he called them, by drilling into the heads of his victims and inserting uric acid into their bodies.

Dahmer died in prison in 1994. He was murdered by another inmate, Christopher Scarver.

Dahmer had been surprisingly open about his urges to kill and engage in pedophilia. In multiple conversations, Dahmer mentioned the idea of control as a driving force behind the murders. "I could completely control a person&mdasha person that I found physically attractive, and keep them with me as long as possible, even if it meant just keeping a part of them," he explained in a conversation with Dateline.

In the interviews, Dahmer also expressed that he knew he had a problem. "This has never been a case of trying to get free," he said of a possible sentence in his trial, as reported by Oxygen. "I didn't ever want freedom. Frankly, I wanted death for myself. This was a case to tell the world that I did what I did not for reasons of hate. I hated no one. I know I was sick or evil, or both. Now, I believe I was sick. The doctors have told me about my sickness, and now I have some peace."

Early Life

Dahmer was born on May 21, 1960, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Lionel and Joyce Dahmer. From all accounts, Dahmer was a happy child who enjoyed typical toddler activities. It was not until the age of 6, after he underwent hernia surgery, that his personality began to change from a jubilant social child to a loner who was uncommunicative and withdrawn. His facial expressions transformed from sweet, childish smiles to a blank, emotionless stare—a look that remained with him throughout his life.

Catalina was a Chilean aristocrat who is said to have been a brutal overlord to her indigenous workers and to have killed about 40 people. Catalina’s peers thought that she was violent tempered and enjoyed torturing her subordinates, and also delighted in sacrilege and sex. She is thought to have murdered her slaves, her lovers, a priest and even her own father. Catalina used her wealth to avoid repercussions, even donating a significant portion of her estate to the Catholic church. She was eventually convicted of her crimes and died while under house arrest in 1665.

The only serial killer on the list that was never caught, the true identity of Jack the Ripper remains unknown until this day, although there is a great deal of speculation. In 1888, he terrorised the Whitechapel neighbourhood in London by slitting open the throats and abdomens of at least five prostitutes that worked in the area. In some cases, he would remove the woman’s uterus, pointing towards the motivation for his crimes and suggesting he had some kind of medical knowledge.

Scarver is the second of five children and was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended James Madison High School before dropping out in the eleventh grade. Eventually, his mother forced him to leave the house because of his increasing alcoholism. Scarver was hired as a trainee carpenter at a Wisconsin Conservation Corps job program. He said that he had been promised by Edward Patts, a supervisor, that upon completion of this program he would be hired full-time, but Patts was dismissed, and as a result, Scarver's full-time position never materialized. [2]

On June 1, 1990, Scarver went to the Wisconsin Conservation Corps training program office and found Steve Lohman, the supervisor who had replaced Edward Patts. Scarver demanded money from Lohman: upon receiving only $15 from Lohman, Scarver shot him in the head. At the same time, he demanded money from site manager John Feyen. According to authorities, Scarver said, "Do you think I'm kidding? I need more money." Scarver shot Lohman twice more before Feyen gave a $3,000 check to Scarver and ran away. [2] [3]

Scarver was convicted and sentenced to life in prison [4] and sent to the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin, in 1992. [5]

On the morning of November 28, 1994, Scarver was assigned to a work detail with two other inmates, Jesse Anderson and Jeffrey Dahmer the detail included him cleaning the prison gymnasium toilet. When corrections officers left the three unsupervised, Scarver beat the other two men with a 20-inch (51 cm) preacher bar that he had removed from a piece of exercise equipment in the prison weight room. When he returned to his cell early, an officer asked him why he was not still working. During that time two officers found Dahmer and Anderson. [6] [7]

Dahmer was declared dead an hour after arriving at the hospital Anderson died two days later. After being found competent to stand trial, [8] Scarver received two more life sentences for these murders. [9]

In 2005, Scarver brought a federal civil rights suit against officials of the Wisconsin Secure Program Facility [10] in which he argued that he had been subjected to cruel and unusual punishment, contrary to his constitutional rights. [11] Scarver stated that he spent 16 years in solitary confinement as a result of the Dahmer killing. [12] A district court judge dismissed the suit against several of the defendants and ruled that the actions of the remaining officials could not be considered unlawful. Scarver unsuccessfully appealed the decision in 2006. [10] Later, federal district court judge Barbara Crabb ordered that Scarver and about three dozen other seriously mentally ill inmates be relocated from the Wisconsin facility. Scarver was eventually relocated to the Centennial Correctional Facility in Colorado. [13]

In 2012, an agent representing Scarver announced that Scarver was willing to write a tell-all book about the killing of Dahmer. [14] [15] [16]

In 2015, Jamie Schram of the New York Post reported that Scarver had believed that Dahmer was unrepentant for his crimes. Schram reported that Dahmer would taunt fellow inmates by shaping his prison food into severed limbs and drizzling packets of ketchup on them to simulate blood. It also reported that, although Scarver had not interacted with Dahmer before killing him, he knew that Dahmer was very unpopular with fellow inmates and had seen him get into several altercations with other prisoners. Scarver was reported to have said that he was revolted by Dahmer's crimes and that he carried a news article in his pocket detailing the crimes. Immediately before murdering Dahmer, Scarver allegedly presented the newspaper clipping to him and asked him whether it was true. Scarver was reported to have said that prison staff left him alone with Dahmer because they wanted Dahmer dead and they knew that Scarver hated him. [17] In a 2015 blog post, Scarver disputed some of these statements. [18]

Jeffrey Dahmer

Jeffrey Dahmer, an American serial killer and sex offender, was born on May 21, 1960. Between the years of 1978 and 1991, Dahmer murdered 17 males in truly horrific fashion. Rape, dismemberment, necrophilia, and cannibalism were all parts of his modus operandi.

By most accounts Dahmer had a normal childhood however he became withdrawn and uncommunicative as he got older. He began showing little to no interest in hobbies or social interaction as he entered adolescence, turning instead to examining animal carcasses and heavy drinking for entertainment. His drinking continued throughout high school but did not stop him from graduating in 1978. It was just three weeks later that the 18-year-old committed his first murder. Due to his parents’ unfolding divorce that summer, Jeffrey was left in the family home alone. He seized the opportunity to act on the dark thoughts that had been growing in his mind. He picked up a hitchhiker named Steven Hicks and offered to take him back to his father’s house to drink beer. But when Hicks decided to leave, Dahmer hit him in the back of the head with a 10 lb. dumbbell. Dahmer then dissected, dissolved, pulverized, and scattered the now imperceptible remains throughout his back yard, and later admitted to killing him simply because he wanted Hicks to stay. Nine years would pass before he killed again.

Dahmer attended college that fall but dropped out due to his alcoholism. After that his father forced him to enlist in the army, where he served as a combat medic in Germany from 1979 to 1981. However, he never kicked the habit and was discharged that spring, moving back home to Ohio. After his drinking continued to cause problems, his father sent him to live with his grandmother in West Allis, Wisconsin. By 1985 he was frequenting gay bathhouses, where he would drug men and rape them as they lay unconscious. Although he was arrested twice for incidents of indecent exposure in 1982 and 1986, he only faced probation and was not charged for the rapes.

Steven Tuomi was his second victim, killed in September of 1987. Dahmer picked him up from a bar and took him back to a hotel room, where he woke up the next morning to Tuomi’s beaten dead body. He later stated that he had no memory of actually murdering Tuomi, implying that he had committed the crime on some sort of blacked out impulse. The killings occurred sporadically after Tuomi, with two victims in 1988, one in 1989, and four in 1990. He continued to lure unsuspecting men from bars or solicited prostitutes, whom he then drugged, raped, and strangled. At this point though, Dahmer also began carrying out particularly disturbing acts with their corpses, continuing to use the bodies for intercourse, taking photographs of the dismemberment process, preserving with scientific precision his victims’ skulls and genitals for display, and even retaining parts for consumption.

During this period, Dahmer was arrested for an incident at his job at the Ambrosia Chocolate Factory, where he drugged and sexually fondled a 13-year-old boy. For this he was given a sentence of five years’ probation, one year at a work release camp, and was required to register as a sex offender. He was released two months early from the work program and subsequently moved into a Milwaukee apartment in May of 1990. There, despite regular appointments with his probation officer, he would remain free to commit four murders that year and eight more in 1991.

Dahmer began killing around one person each week by the summer of 1991. He became infatuated with the idea that he could turn his victims into “zombies” to act as youthful and submissive sexual partners. He used many different techniques, such as drilling holes into their skull and injecting hydrochloric acid or boiling water into their brains. Soon, neighbors began to complain about strange noises and awful smells coming from Dahmer’s apartment. On one occasion, a lobotomized victim left unattended even made it out onto the street to ask several bystanders for help. When Dahmer returned, however, he successfully convinced the police that the irrational young man was simply his extremely intoxicated boyfriend. The officers failed to run a background check that would have revealed Dahmer’s sex offender status, allowing him to narrowly escape his fate for a little while longer.

On July 22, 1991, Dahmer lured Tracy Edwards into his home with the promise of cash in exchange for his company. While inside, Edwards was then forced into the bedroom by Dahmer with a butcher knife. During the struggle, Edwards was able to get free and escape out into the streets where he flagged down a police car. When the police arrived at Dahmer’s apartment, Edwards alerted them to the knife that was in the bedroom. Upon entering the bedroom, the officers found the pictures of dead bodies and dismembered limbs that allowed them to finally place Dahmer under arrest. Further investigation of the home led them to find a severed head in the refrigerator, three more severed heads throughout the apartment, multiple photographs of the victims, and more human remains in his refrigerator. A total of seven skulls were found in his apartment as well as a human heart in the freezer. An altar was also constructed with candles and human skulls in his closet. After being taken into custody, Dahmer confessed and began divulging the gruesome details of his crimes to the authorities.

Dahmer was indicted on 15 murder charges and the trial began on January 30, 1992. Even though the evidence against him was overwhelming, Dahmer pled insanity as his defense due to the nature of his incredibly disturbing and uncontrollable impulses. Following two weeks of trial, the court declared him sane and guilty on 15 counts of murder. He was sentenced to 15 life terms, for a total of 957 years in prison. In May of the same year, he entered a guilty plea for the murder of his first victim, Stephen Hicks, and received an additional life sentence.

Dahmer served his time at the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin. During his time in prison, Dahmer expressed remorse for his actions and wished for his own death. He also read the Bible and declared himself a born-again Christian, ready for his final judgment. He was attacked twice by fellow inmates, with the first attempt to slice his neck open leaving him with only superficial wounds. However, he was attacked a second time on November 28, 1994, by an inmate as they cleaned one of the prison showers. Dahmer was found still alive, but died on the way to the hospital from severe head trauma.

Meet the world’s most heinous cannibal killers

In the sleepy town of Aberdeen, NSW, Australian woman Katherine Knight butchered her lover John Price to death, skinned him and put him on a meat hook before decapitating him and boiling his head on February 29, 2000.

She served Price’s cooked flesh with potatoes, pumpkins, cabbage and squash with gravy to his children at her home.

Knight was arrested before the children came home from school and later sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the brutal murder.

She was the first woman in Australian history to receive a life sentence without parole.

This month marks 16 years since the shocking murder of Price.

But disturbingly, Knight’s crime wasn’t the first or last of its kind.

Armin Meiwes — ‘The Master Butcher’

In a tale that horrified Germany, Armin Meiwes found his victim, Bernd-Juergen Brandes, over the internet. Brandes, an IT manager, had posted an advert for someone to “obliterate his life and leave no trace”.

Brandes travelled by train to meet Meiwes in the western town of Rotenburg in March 2001. There, the cannibal videotaped himself severing Brandes’ penis with a knife before both men tried to eat it.

Bleeding profusely, Brandes fell unconscious. With the video recorder still rolling, Meiwes laid him out on a bench, kissing him on the lips before plunging a knife into his throat.

He suspended the victim on a meat hook and froze 30kg of flesh in parcels and later ate some with cabbage and potatoes.

In a shocking recent interview, Meiwes gave never-before-heard details of his gruesome act.

“I decorated the table with nice candles … I took out my best dinner service, and fried and piece of rump steak — a piece from his back — made what I call princess potatoes, and sprouts,” he said.

“The first bite was, of course, very strange. It was a feeling I can’t really describe. I’d spent over 40 years longing for it, dreaming about it,” he added.

“And now I was getting the feeling that I was actually achieving this perfect inner connection through his flesh. The flesh tastes like pork but stronger,” Meiwes went on to say.

Anthony Morley —’Gay Cannibal Killer’

Former “Mr Gay UK” Anthony Morley is spending the rest of his life in jail after being found guilty for butchering his boyfriend and cooking his flesh.

In 2008, Morley, 36, slashed 33-year-old boyfriend Damian Oldfield’s throat before stabbing him numerous times after watching Brokeback Mountain in bed. He then cut up and cooked his flesh.

Upon his sentence, Judge James Stewart, QC, said: “This is one of the most gruesome murders I have encountered. I associated cannibalism with eras long gone, with the tale of Robinson Crusoe. No longer.”

Jeffrey Dahmer —’Milwaukee Cannibal’

Jeffrey Dahmer was a chocolate factory worker who slaughtered, raped and mutilated at least 17 young men before eating their body parts.

Also known as the “Milwaukee Cannibal”, Dahmer’s killing spree spanned over 13 years between 1978 and 1991 — where he would drug boys and young men, molest some and eat them.

The sick American cannibal said his inclination to murder and necrophilia began at the age of 14.

He pointed out to police that he always wore a condom when having sex with his dead partners or their body parts.

He believed he could turn his victims into zombies by drilling into their skulls and injecting acid into their brains.

Sentenced to life imprisonment, Dahmer was killed by a fellow inmate in 1994.

Matthew Williams

Matthew Williams, 34, was caught in a hotel room in 2014 eating parts of a 22-year-old woman’s face.

The victim named as shop worker Cerys Yemm met him at pub just hours earlier before going back to Sirhowy Arms Hotel in Caerphilly, South Wales.

Williams stabbed and killed his victim and ate her face and an eye.

He died while under arrest.

Jorge Beltrao Negromonte

Dubbed the real-life Sweeney Todd, Jorge Beltrao Negromonte, 54, with his wife and mistress lured women to their house with the promise of work as a babysitter.

The sick trio then killed their victims and baked their flesh into meat pies.

The thick empanada pastries were filled with flesh from the victims and sold to customers in their shop, schools and hospitals in Pernambuco, Brazil, claiming they contained chicken and tuna.

The pies were also eaten by the trio, neighbours and a small child who lived with them.

Police found the remains of two victims in the backyard of the house.

When the killers were arrested in April 2012 in the city of Garanhuns they confessed to the crimes and said they belonged to a sect that preached “the purification of the world and the reduction of its population”.

Negromonte later described how he sliced a teenage mother to death in front of her child and then fed bits of the flesh to the tot.

Negromonte was sentenced to 23 years in prison while his wife and mistress received 20-year sentences.

Tamara Samsonova — The ‘Granny Ripper’

A serial killer dubbed the “Granny Ripper” was suspected of eating her victims’ organs and was said to have “favoured their lungs”, it has been reported.

St Petersburg police found the headless body of Valentina Ulanova near a pond after her carer Tamara Samsonova, 68, was caught on CCTV removing the victim’s body in a black bag.

Ms Ulanova had been drugged and then cut into pieces with a hacksaw.

What followed was the unravelling of a murder spree involving at least 11 victims that took place over two decades and unmasked a serial killer who delighted in cutting up her victims — and was suspected of eating their internal organs.

A search of Samsonova’s flat not only revealed diaries where she proudly detailed her crimes but a sharp knife, and blood smears in the bathroom.

Several unsolved murders were investigated for possible links to Samsonova.

Samsonova wrote about her exploits in her diary and even confessed to police directly about her monstrous crimes, the New York Daily News reported.

St. Petersburg detective Mikhail Timoshatov told Britain’s The Sun newspaper: “Tamara Samsonova says that at first she made her friend sleep — and then cut her into pieces,” while she was still alive.

Another one of her suspected victims was a headless, legless and armless man’s body found on the same street 12 years ago — his business card was discovered in Samsonova’s home.

Police also feared Samsonova’s husband, who she reported missing in 2005, was one of the 11 victims she boasted about in her diary. He has never been found.

In court, the judge asked the Granny Ripper her thoughts about being jailed.

Her reply was as matter-of-fact as her macabre diary.

“You decide, your honour. After all, I am guilty and I deserve a punishment.”

Ottis Tools

Ottis Toole was an American serial killer and cannibal who worked alongside serial killer Henry Lee Lucas.

The two met in a soup kitchen in Jacksonville in 1978 and began a sexual relationship and went on a murder spree together.

It was only Toole who confessed to cannibalism and was convicted to six counts of murder.

Toole admitted to having committed his first murder at 14, describing how he cooked and ate humans with his homemade barbecue sauce.
